When you walk through the doors of Kay Jewelers you know beautiful jewelry is awaiting you. What you might not have known, however, is that there is a wide selection of jewelry in many fine metals. Not only gold is used in jewelry sold by Kay’s but also platinum, silver, and other metals, too.

Gold

Gold has been used in jewelry for centuries. And, today it is no surprise that it remains one of the most valuable and popular metals for jewelry to be made of. People are aware of yellow gold and white gold, but there is also rose gold. Gold may be 10 karat, 14 karat, or 18 karat when made in jewelry. There is also 24 karat gold, but this is pure and too soft for use in jewelry. Even 18 karat gold is softer and more likely to break or be dented. The difference in the karat is how many other parts of other metals are mixed in with the gold. The 10 karat gold has the least amount of pure gold and 18 karat has the most, with the exception of pure gold. Some silver jewelry is dipped in gold to give it the gold appearance without the high cost.

Platinum

Platinum is the new popular metal for jewelry to be made of. It is more expensive than gold so many people feel extra special when they own a piece of jewelry made of platinum. It is a silverfish color, much like white gold, and most people cannot tell them apart. Platinum is more rare than gold so it is more expensive and the color of silver makes it the perfect accompaniment to diamond jewelry. Another benefit of platinum is that it is hypoallergenic, tarnish resistant, and weighs considerably more than gold does.

Silver

Silver has been used in jewelry for centuries and today it is still very popular. It is more affordable than gold and platinum and it is the perfect metal for earrings, bracelets, and rings in order to buy more. Silver is combined with other metals in order to be stronger so it may be used in jewelry. It is very common for silver to polish, but if it is worn or polished regularly this is not a problem. Pure silver jewelry should be made up of 92.75 percent silver and the rest other metals for strength.

Additional Metals

Some other metals that have become quite popular in recent years for all types of jewelry from wedding bands to bracelets include tungsten, titanium, and stainless steel. Titanium is amazingly strong and that is why it is good for men’s jewelry. Tungsten does not corrode and it is easy to keep clean and looking good. Stainless still does not tarnish like silver and it does not rust as easy. All of these properties make these other metals popular with different types of individuals.
